Abstract

Hemagglutination-inhibiting antibody(H-I antibody) titers of Japanese B encephalitis were measured by the method of Clarke and Casals, with sera of 12 healthy mothers and 17 normal newborn infants who were admitted to Kyungpook University Hospital during period from May through November of 1971. In order to remove the IgM, sera were treated with 2-mercaptorethanol(2-ME).
Among sera obtained in pre-epidemic season (May to June), four of 7 newborns (57.1%) and 2 of 5 mothers (40%) had indetectable levels (£¼1:10). Mean antibody titer of newborns having detectable levels was 1:33 (range 1:10 to 1:80) and that of mother having detectable levels was 1:20.
Among sera obtained during and in post-epidemic season (Sept. to Nov.) 4 of 10 newborns(40%) adn 4 of 7 mothers(57.1%) had undetectable levels. Mean antibody titer of newborns having detectable levels was 1:56(range 1:10 to 1:80)
